Gayle Wald is professor of English and American Studies at George Washington University. Her presentation is drawn from her book “It’s Been Beautiful,” a study of the seminal public-TV show “Soul!” (1968-73) forthcoming from Duke University Press. Her previous books include Shout, Sister, Shout! (Beacon Press), a biography of gospel musician Sister Rosetta Tharpe, which was a New York Times Editor’s Choice Book in 2007, and Crossing the Line (Duke UP, 2000), a study of racial passing in American literature and culture. With Oliver Wang, she is co-editor of the Journal of Popular Music Studies.
