This lecture explores some facets of the strange co-existence of the idea of “color blindness” as a social ideal in the context of a social reality in which race heavily determines economic and social outcomes, racially-coded political narratives fuel national belonging and the entertainment industry regularly profits from mass consumption of narrow visions of “blackness.” What happens to “black” creative practices in this context? What kinds of alternatives for representation and belonging do these conditions generate?
