Professor Thomas Allen Harris two films, “Heaven Earth and Hell” and “É Minha Cara/That’s My Face”, will be screened together for the first time at the Maysles Documentary Center in Harlem on November 7th.
The screening will be followed by a discussion with Dr. Jafari Allen (chair of AFAM at Columbia University) and Nia Whitmal (Yale ‘21 and PhD candidate at Cornell) as well as a reception with light refreshments.
Both films use Yoruba-based cosmologies and African spiritual practices to explore crossroads and cosmologies. They also showcase early investigations of community storytelling that would structure my 30-year film practice - including “Archive Aesthetics and Community Storytelling” course at Yale as well as my current film project, “My Mom, The Scientist.” In these films, I passed the camera to different people that I met along my journey—some of those quite intimately and others not.
Shot in France and Canada, “Heaven Earth and Hell” premiered at the New York Film Festival and was included in the 1995 Whitney Museum of American Art Biennial. In contrast, “E Minha Cara” was shot completely on super 8mm film in Brazil, Tanzania, and the USA and premiered at the Toronto, Sundance, Berlin, and Tribeca Film Festivals.
