Ed Rugemer brings to light previously overlooked connections between slave codes established in Barbadoes (1661), adapted in Jamaica (1684) and those implemented in setting up a slave society in South Carolina, in his recently published article, “The Development of Mastery and Race in the Comprehensive Slave Codes of the Greater Caribbean during the Seventeenth Century.” (William and Mary Quarterly, ed ser., 70, no. 3, July 2013).
