Lucy Caplan feature published in The New Yorker

Lucy Caplan

A feature article by PhD candidate Lucy Caplan, whose research explores the presence of African American culture in the traditionally white space of the theatrical genre of opera, has been published in The New Yorker magazine. Caplan’s article, “A Small Step Toward Correcting the Overwhelming Whiteness of Opera,” highlights recent moves in the genre to eschew color-blind casting decisions to ask “how opera can approach canonical works in ways that illuminate and critique their racial biases rather than eliding and implicitly condoning them.”
