“Think of this Seriously”: C. L. R. James, New World
Group, and Decolonizing Black Study.”

Minkah Makalani is Director of the Center for Africana
Studies and Associate Professor of History at Johns
Hopkins University. He works in intellectual history,
black political thought, the Black radical tradition, and
diaspora. The author of, In the Cause of Freedom:
Radical Black Internationalism from Harlem to London,
1917-1939, he is at work on two manuscripts: Words
Past the Margin: Essays in Black Thought and the
Politically Unimaginable, and Calypso Conquered the
World: C. L. R. James and the Politically Unimaginable
in Trinidad.
