Bio
Cedric Preston McCoy is a PhD student and Dean’s Emerging Scholar in Music and Black Studies. He primarily writes about black american popular music practices such as Hip Hop, Funk, R&B, Jazz, and Fusion, but remains interested in other pop musics and musicians from the afro-diaspora. Broadly, Cedric is interested in questions of auditory culture, ontology, aesthetics, and temporality; his recent work is oriented towards understanding the relationships between black creative expression and the technologies of its (re)production. Cedric’s work aims to integrate the methodologies of sound and media studies, black studies, cultural history, and musicology.
Beyond his scholarship Cedric plays trumpet, collects old bugles and other odd brass instruments, is an aspiring conductor and hobbyist cyclist, and enjoys listening to his library of CDs and albums. He enjoys animated films and is passionate about attending live music performances
