Shefali Das is a PhD student in the Departments of African American Studies and Sociology at Yale University, and a Dean’s Emerging Scholar at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. Her research focuses on relationships between labor, capitalism, race, and inequality. Her B.A. honors thesis, advised by Dr. Michael Mark Cohen, examined the criminal legal system’s use of fines and fees and the effects of neoliberalism and capitalism on state violence and policing. At Yale, she hopes to understand these relationships more clearly, focusing on the role of economic systems in racialized state violence in the U.S.
